This module explores markets and market economics, encouraging discussion of how individual consumers, industrial firms, governments, and other networks and organisations affect consumer culture and shape market dynamics.

Students will investigate the current volatility in the marketplace, and the need for agile supply chains where supplier and customer teams explore opportunities for realigning processes. They will research the importance of adopting the triple bottom line, i.e. planet, people and profit, to ensure the long-term success of the business and future well-being of society in line with the UN’s SDG 12. This module aims to provide a foundation for students to develop their understanding of marketing research methods for academic and professional purposes. Students will explore a number of areas of marketing research including; the use of both primary and secondary data; an introduction to quantitative and qualitative research; and creating research samples. In addition, students will develop an appreciation of ethical implications of the research process to facilitate responsible research practice. The module provides an introduction to the market research industry and relates research skills learned in the module to real-life application in business.

However, the most important requirement is a proven enthusiasm for and knowledge of fashion. This is why almost all fashion courses, apart from the business-focused degrees, ask you to submit a portfolio of your work and attend an interview to discuss this portfolio. Studying an art and design subject is often essential, especially for the creative degrees such as fashion design, and is the easiest way to build up a portfolio of work.

Students can choose to work Independently or form collaborative partnerships to realise their proposition in developing the project through to completion. This unit introduces students to the fashion marketing theories and processes. Students will explore the marketing mix, market research and marketing strategies for different size organisations, before researching the influence marketing has on profit, reputation and the customer relationship. This unit explores fundamental aspects of advertising, the history, theories, purpose, scope and optimum channels. Students will investigate audiences and markets, as well as the psychological influence, impact and ethics of story-telling in marketing campaigns.

You can expect a decent number of contact hours – usually between 20 and 25 hours – in your first year of a fashion degree. On top of this, you will be expected to do a fair bit of independent study, whether that’s at home or in the fashion studios. This module seeks to explore the many factors which influence the actions, behaviour and decisions taken by people in the work-place. It focuses on the complex interactions and relationships between people and groups, both within and between organisations. Furthermore, it explores the impact of the external environment, particularly the expectations and behaviour of wider society, with its roles as a potential customer and citizen. The term fashion is used interchangeably with clothing, mode, dress, style and costume and yet it captures the spirit of the times, through seasonal collections in the major cities of London, Paris, Milan and New York.

The range of perspectives in project management studies are analysed both in theory and in practice. The application of theories is enhanced through the use of case study examples in the public, private and third sectors, encompassing an analysis of project management in a range of organisational structures. Emphasis on knowledge in this area is extended further to the criticality of the project manager’s skills in managing the range of both internal and external stakeholders. As such, this module will draw and build on student’s knowledge previously acquired through responsible leadership, entrepreneurial, finance and people management modules. You will then learn to apply these techniques to areas of the fashion industry such as branding, advertising, fashion media, marketing, visual merchandising, events, public relations, retail environments and colour and trend forecasting.

The BFA is the trade association representing the interests of professional florists. Our amazing industry connections also create opportunities for work experience through live projects as well as opening doors for work, generally though traineeships in creative industries. Last year, students progressed to prestigious universities including Central St Martins, London College of Fashion, and Nottingham and Trent. The fashion industry is very competitive and it can be difficult to find a job after graduating. Just having a degree is not enough, especially if you want to be a fashion designer.
